Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “Whoever helps his brother in his time of need, Allah will be there in his time of need.”
[Saheeh Muslim]
What began as a local conflict in Yemen has spiraled into a five-year civil war with no end in sight.
Yemen is the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, with more than 24 million people – some 80 per cent of the population – in need of humanitarian assistance, including more than 12 million children.
Yemen has been locked in conflict since 2015, when an opposition group from north Yemen, the Houthis, took over the government in Sana’a and began a war that has now spread across borders.
Attacks in the war have not only made it difficult for Yemen to produce food, but also hampered efforts to get food aid to the people who need it most.
Children continue to be killed and maimed in the conflict. Around 2 million children under 5 years old are suffering from acute malnutrition and require treatment.
Even before the current crisis, Yemen’s economy has been fragile with hundreds of thousands of families with no steady source of income.
Yemen’s malnutrition rate, prior to the war, ranked as one of the world’s worst, and more than half of its population lacked access to drinking water.
The country’s health system has been ravaged by years of political unrest. Tackling COVID-19 on top of the existing humanitarian emergency requires urgent action.

Since March 2015 the people of Yemen have been ravaged by a bloody war between the Houthi rebels and supporters of Yemen’s internationally recognised government. In a country already gripped by hunger, death and starvation stares the Yemeni people in the face everyday. Colours of Hope ran a short but well coordinated project running for the month of October to 09 November 2015. The project saw several people respond to the Yemen Relief 2015 Campaign with winter wear and various food items especially baby formula for the malnourished babies in the impoverished Arab state. Apart from Colours of Hope ladies and volunteers making efforts to raise funds, the ladies of Roosevelt and Montgomery Park lent a huge helping hand in raising funds at their Spring Garden Tea held in Montgomery Park on 31 October 2015 for the Yemen Relief 2015 Campaign. 22 November 2015 was the first step to see everyone’s hard work come to fruition. COH team helped in packing the containers ready for Yemen at the Gift of Givers Logistic Centre in Bramley View, Johannesburg.
